A CRITIQUE OF CONFLICTING ISSUES AMONG GENERATIONS IN AFRICAN DRAMA

By

Abstract

In Africa. it is commonly believed that older people value tradition more than younger ones and that old age goes with wisdom. But Wole Soyinka 's Camwood on the Leaves and Esiaba lrobi's nwokedi which this paper analyses. reveal that age cannot be the yardstick for measuring belief and wisdom. Conflict arises from the difference in the perception of life by people. Frustration of wishes and interference in people's lives also manifest in conflict. Such conflicts art.: found in homes, professions, communities, business centers and political platforms and even at national and international levels. Values vary from one society to another and differences in individual choices and interests result in possible misunderstanding among people. Politico-religious crisis is engendered by many visible factors which are built on the individuals. Several critics have explored the above works of Soyinka and Irobi but not together to expose the politico-religious issues in them. This is the lacuna this paper stri\.es to fill. This paper analyses conflicting issues and diverse facets or human problems as well as generations versus religious and political conflicts in the above works. This paper proffers understanding, guidance and tolerance as conflict resolution. This paper is analyzed using Marxist theory.
