Abstract

There is no gaining the fact that children are the joy of every parent.
Indeed, in a traditional society, the life of a man is not complete without a child.
This explains why most people who are well to do but are barren never care to
adopt a child to be called their own. According to the Holy Bible 1, children are the
heritage of the Lord. In addition, the Holy Quran also lends a support to the same
fact that wealth and Children are allurements oflife of this world2• In the Yoruba
customary setting children are regarded as fruit of the womb, gains of marriage,
sources of joy to parents, pillars to hold the future and joy of the old age. These
accolades are part of the terms used to qualify children. However, these
qualifications are more than what children are.
