Abstract

The University of Abuja like most Nigerian Universities is yet to come to terms with the reality of the existence of stress. As a consequence, there are no structure put in place to redress stressors. Stress is therefore poorly managed. The study is aimed at identifying factors responsible for stress among academic staff of the University of Abuja. The Findings Indicate that excess work load, increase in students enrolment, inadequate infrastructural facilities and unpleasant working environment, which are interrelated are the high stressors among the academic staff. Although the study is not a correlational study between these factors and performance, there is no doubt that stress correlates the university's permanent site where the Federal Government should provide facilities, continuous staff improvement and recruitment, faster processing and payment of staff allowance will among other things eliminate and or better manage the stress factors.
