Abstract

The traditional gender roles in Africa have been greatly influenced by modernization.
globalization and industrialization. In contemporary African society, women's
empowerment and gender mainstreaming arc very vital in workforce. Change in gender relations emanate from economic, feminist and egalitarian values. Women are in different professions and disciplines. The feminists among them strive to uplift womanhood through writing and research programmes. This paper examines career development in selected works of Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo namely, Children of the Eagle; Trafficked. House of Symbols; The Last of the Strong Ones; Roses and Bullets; Fractures and Fragments; Rhythms of Life, Stories of Modem Nigeria; Rituals and Departures; and Echoes in the Mind under these sub-headings: Academia; Politics; Bus mess; and Creativity. Woman ism, a branch of the Feminist Literary Theory, is the theoretical framework of this paper. Tradition recommends silence for women and breaking such silence becomes the target of women if change and re construction must be achieved.
Womanism recognizes the fact that many women arc of great potentials and

The paper notes that women's self development, self-gratification, and self-fulfillment most often come through struggle due to their tight schedules and commitments. Thus at times, being a mother, a worker, a researcher, or writer culminates into several challenges that hinder achievement if commitment and determination are lacking
